OVERVIEW
This course prepares healthcare professionals to recognize and respond to burn injuries and serious skin conditions that require timely, specialized care. With an emphasis on early decision-making, Dr. Bounthavy Homsombath (Joseph M. Still Burn Center Medical Director at Doctors Hospital of Augusta) teaches participants practical knowledge that will guide patient care from initial presentation through referral and treatment.
Topics covered include:
- Demographics and common causes of burn injuries
- Emergency burn care during the first 24 hours following injury
- Initial assessment, stabilization and management of burn and wound patients
- Principles of burn wound assessment and closure
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), SJS/TEN overlap and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)
- Necrotizing fasciitis and other rapidly progressing skin conditions
- Early warning signs requiring prompt recognition and intervention
- Criteria for referral or transfer to a verified burn center
